Make Your Morning Sacred
Photography by: Burcu
A couple of months, ago, I was speaking with three women in my life who value solo morning time, but were really struggling to get back into a morning meditation practice.
Their number one problem? Getting sucked into emails and phone notifications.
I was honestly shocked; I just never in a million years thought these women would be struggling with this. It lit a fire under me and got me thinking: “If these three incredible, conscious, connected women are struggling to create a sacred morning for themselves, I can only imagine how many people are truly struggling with this.”
For those of us longing to create a morning that feels sacred, intentional, and restorative, one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is:
“Where am I placing my attention when I wake up?”
Not from a punitive place or a rigid must-have-a-morning-routine-place (ew!). But because where we place our attention first thing in the morning is…everything. Our psyche is so malleable. Our subconscious mind is super receptive to what we place into it during the first hour of waking. This is what makes the morning such an ideal time to meditate.
Most conversations about morning rituals focus on productivity and achievement. I’m not interested in that. I’m interested in soul-deep connection. And the morning is a prime time to prioritize that.
What Is a Sacred Morning?
The word sacred comes from the Old French word sacrer, which means "to dedicate." The word morning refers to the first part of the day.
A sacred morning, then, is simply this:
Dedicating the first part of your day to your relationship with Self and Source.
Rather than immediately giving your attention to the outside world, you begin by giving your attention to your internal world—to your breath, your body, your soul, and your connection with the Universe / Source / Spirit / God(dess).
Why Make Your Morning Sacred?
Our attention is our most precious resource. Where we place it matters more than ever.
Our culture teaches us to begin the day by looking outward. Before we've even connected with ourselves, we're urgently pressured to check notifications, read emails, take in the news, scroll social media, and place other people's priorities ahead of our own.
Combine this with the masculine-dominated morning productivity and biohack movements, we've begun approaching our mornings from places of stress, anxiety, urgency, and performance — rather than as sacred spans of time to attune to what is timeless and ever-present: our souls and our relationships with Source.
The Neuroscience: Why Morning Time Matters
Neuroscience has begun to explore what our ancestors, spiritual traditions, and wisdom lineages have intuitively known for thousands of years:
Morning is a powerful time for directing your attention.
Neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to change and reorganize itself—is shaped, in part, by where we repeatedly place our attention. Researchers including Michael Merzenich and Jeffrey Schwartz have demonstrated that focused attention is one of the key ingredients that makes change possible.
Your brain registers what you repeatedly focus on as most important. If the first place your attention goes each morning is notifications, email, social media, or alarming news, your brain begins organizing around fear, urgency, distraction, anxiety, and reactivity. If the first place your attention goes is meditation, intention, and connection with yourself and Spirit, your brain begins organizing around presence, peace, clarity, and purpose.
The morning offers a unique opportunity to consciously choose what deserves your focused attention.

What Research on Morning Meditation Shows
Across studies, people who practice meditation regularly experience lower stress and anxiety, improved attention, greater emotional regulation, increased positive emotion, and greater well-being. These benefits can emerge with relatively brief daily practice and appear to strengthen with consistency.
Recent research suggests that a morning meditation practice may be especially beneficial.
A 2025 study found that people who meditated in the morning experienced more positive emotions throughout the day, which predicted greater vitality and better mental health by day's end. Morning meditation was especially beneficial following a poor night's sleep, suggesting it may help buffer some of the emotional effects of inadequate rest.
Other randomized controlled trials have found that just 13 minutes of daily guided meditation over eight weeks improved attention, working memory, emotional regulation, anxiety, and mood compared with an active control group.
Research by Barbara Fredrickson and colleagues further suggests that the more consistently people practice mindfulness and loving-kindness meditation, the greater the increase in positive emotions they experience.
All of these studies support something contemplative traditions have understood for thousands of years:
How you begin your morning shapes how you experience your day. And how you repeatedly experience your days gradually shapes your life.
A sacred morning ritual isn't simply about feeling better for a few moments. It's about gradually reshaping how you relate with yourself, how you relate with other people, and your overall quality of life itself for your entire life!
Create a Sacred Morning with My Morning Meditation Album!
I am so excited to share with you my brand new morning chanting and meditation album Rise, Sweet Darlin’, Rise!
You can stream it here and you can purchase it for $9 USD for a full .mp3 download of the entire album. This way, you don’t have to open a music app to listen. You can save it to your phone’s FIles app so that your attention is cleanly directed where you want to place it each morning. 😉
Here are my simple tips for creating a sacred morning for daily meditation:
Protect your attention. Silence non-essential notifications and/or don’t check your emails, socials, news, etc. for the first hour of waking. Try it for 1 week and see how you feel.
Select a space. Choose one spot in your home or space that becomes your dedicated daily meditation spot.
Meditate. Choose one meditation from the album each day — whatever one you’re drawn to!
Reflectively write. After practicing the meditation, free write about your experience and let anything else that wants to be named come through you.
If you've been wanting to create a sacred morning ritual, that's exactly why I created Rise, Sweet Darlin', Rise. Each meditation is designed to help you reclaim your attention; reconnect with your soul, body, breath, Spirit, and Nature; and begin your day from a place of presence and connection.
Renewing Your Relationship with Meditation
I have been meditating in the morning for 15 years, and it has truly changed my life as a daily ritual.
Morning meditation is a daily commitment to remembering and returning to who I am. It is an opportunity to consciously direct my most precious resource—my attention—to my most sacred and sustaining relationships: Self, Source, and Gaia.
From that place, I don't only experience a better morning but I also begin to experience a more present, nourishing, joyful, generative, and compassionate existence with myself, with others, and with all of Life itself.
With care,
Heather
